The August Xbox update for Xbox Series X and Series S brings cloud save version restoration, cloud streaming for games currently downloading, and deeper Xbox 360 profile integration, following weeks of testing within the Xbox Insiders program.
Cloud Save Rollbacks Arrive on Xbox Series X|S
Microsoft has deployed a new set of system features for Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. According to official announcements published by Xbox, the most practical feature in this release is the ability to recover cloud-saved game data. Players can now examine a historical record of synchronized versions for a save file, pick an older iteration, and trigger a direct restoration from the console interface. At launch, this capability is restricted to Forza Horizon 6, accessible directly through the game management menu. Microsoft has confirmed that additional titles will be added in subsequent updates.
Hybrid Streaming During Active Downloads
The August update introduces the option to stream a title via cloud infrastructure while local installation packages are actively downloading in the background. If a game belongs to the Xbox Game Pass catalog and supports Xbox Cloud Gaming, users can start playing immediately via stream. The console handles the local installation in the background, allowing players to transition to native hardware rendering once the installation finishes.
Expanded Xbox 360 and Legacy Profile Integration
Xbox 360 titles now feature dedicated sections within their game hubs, where users can consult achievement progress, screenshots, and cloud save synchronization status. Furthermore, achievement notifications for these classic titles—including games from Windows Phone—will now appear in the achievement history of each user’s profile.
Streamlined Inventory and Subscription Badging
Management features rounding out the August package target wishlist capacity and digital rights attribution. The Xbox wishlist limit has been expanded to accommodate up to 1,000 games, both released and upcoming. Additionally, the installation management interface now displays a badge that indicates if a game or its additional content is obtained thanks to Game Pass. The update also corrects a bug that caused unexpected crashes when scrolling through the “Games & Apps” menu.
Deployments of these six features began on August 12, marking a continuation of Microsoft’s bi-weekly cadence of updates for Xbox Series X|S consoles.
