Xbox CEO Won’t Confirm The Elder Scrolls 6 Exclusivity at Gamescom 2026

At Gamescom 2026, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma sidestepped questions regarding the platform exclusivity of Bethesda Game Studios’ anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6, maintaining that while major platforms require dedicated content, balancing the health of the business remains the top priority.

The Exclusivity Tightrope at Gamescom 2026

Microsoft brought a massive physical footprint to Gamescom 2026, deploying dedicated show-floor spaces, an independent livestream broadcast, and hands-on build trials for upcoming titles like Fable. Yet, when industry observers pressed leadership on long-term hardware architectures and the publishing roadmap for tentpole acquisitions, the messaging grew carefully guarded.

Speaking to the BBC during the convention, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma addressed the company’s evolving multiplatform posture without committing to a concrete distribution model for Bethesda’s upcoming role-playing epic.

“We are increasingly going to be one of the largest platforms in the world. Every platform needs some form of exclusive experiences and content,” Sharma stated during the BBC interview. “And so, what we’ve shared is Gears and Clockwork. We’re going to do the best we can to continue to do that, all in the context of the business being healthy, and so we have to balance that.”

When explicitly prodded about whether The Elder Scrolls 6 would remain locked to Microsoft hardware ecosystems, Sharma offered a smile and a non-committal appraisal, calling the title simply “a beautiful game.” This guarded stance follows months of conflicting signals from Xbox management regarding how aggressively the corporation intends to gatekeeper its intellectual property portfolio.

Shifting Philosophies from Spencer to Sharma

Under former CEO Phil Spencer, Microsoft initiated a tentative embrace of multiplatform distribution, bringing major franchises like Minecraft, Fallout, and select racing titles to rival hardware. At the same time, Spencer previously asserted that keeping The Elder Scrolls 6 exclusive was economically viable given the sheer scale of the Xbox ecosystem.

However, under Sharma’s leadership following her appointment, the company has leaned back toward explicit console exclusives for major tentpoles, pointing to upcoming projects like Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as hardware-selling anchors. Simultaneously, soaring development budgets and inflating component costs driven by broader silicon market pressures have incentivized reaching the widest possible addressable market.

During her BBC interview, Sharma pointed directly to these macroeconomic realities, highlighting a need for industry-wide innovation around hardware affordability and energy efficiency.

“I think in addition all of the industry needs to start to innovate on affordability and efficiency,” Sharma told the BBC. “That is something that we have not had to do. But with the crisis that’s currently happening in hardware and components, it is absolutely something all of us need to be thinking about and innovating on and giving people more choice in terms of how they play their console and how they purchase their console.”

Hardware Ambitions and the Next-Generation Horizon

Beyond software exclusivity, Microsoft’s hardware strategy remains opaque as the company looks toward its next generation of devices. Sharma hinted at ongoing development under the codename “Helix,” noting that the division has been hard at work on a new family of devices designed to push performance boundaries while integrating hybrid use cases.

Among those capabilities is the push to bridge traditional console architecture with PC gaming libraries, allowing users to run native desktop software builds directly on living-room hardware. This pivot opens up complex questions regarding whether Xbox intends to iterate on the lower-cost model pioneered by the Xbox Series S, or explore dedicated portable gaming form factors akin to modern handheld PC architectures.

For now, Bethesda and Xbox continue to keep details regarding The Elder Scrolls 6 tightly controlled. Aside from a sparse teaser trailer first revealed in 2018, public sights of the project remain virtually non-existent, though executive preview access suggests internal builds are progressing in scale and narrative depth.
