The President of the People’s Republic of China gave a speech that must have been heard in the United States. Xi Jinping said in his year-end message that a common aspiration is “to achieve the complete reunification of the homeland”. His words are a reference to Taiwan, which to date functions as an independent country.
Beijing considers the territory with capital in Taipei as a rebel province and seeks regain control of the island off the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese ruler said that he “sincerely hopes that all the daughters and daughters of the Chinese nation will join forces to create a better future for our homeland.”
This week the Chinese authorities warned that will take “drastic measures” if Taiwan formalizes its independence. Taipei maintains a strong link with Western powers, especially the United States. Xi promised efforts to make the Chinese communists “keep up with the times.”
