design and connectivity

Xiaomi 13 Lite

Right away, we already see that these models are well aligned with the best that each brand has to offer in the current market. Both use a straighter and more discreet camera block, with the same color as the cover. The difference is that Xiaomi has a circle inside to house two of the three cameras, while Motorola prefers to leave the lens more “free” inside the module.

The appliances have the same weight. The 13 Lite is the thinnest of the pair, and the Edge 40 opts for smaller dimensions than its rival in height and width. The Chinese has a plastic body, with a glass back. The competitor, however, followed a different path, having an aluminum body, with a plastic back or another material that imitates leather.

Motorola Edge 40

In any case, Edge features greater protection against dust and water, as its IP68 certification is above only IP53. Both still provide centralized notch, even if the pill format is larger than the simple hole, in addition to the presence of a biometric reader integrated into the screen.

Neither of them has a microSD card slot, which eliminates any storage expansion. In connectivity, there are no differences here. They have sixth-generation Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC for contactless payments.

The Edge 40 opens the scoring in the duel by offering the best resistance of the duo.

On both sides, we find a 6.55-inch screen, with Full HD+ resolution and HDR10+ support, to improve playback on compatible streams. Xiaomi’s is a 12-bit AMOLED, for reproduction of 68 billion colors. Motorola’s OLED display has a high level of brightness, but it doesn’t look much different from the rival.

If there’s a feature in the Edge 40’s favor, it’s its 144 Hz refresh rate, which allows for greater fluidity than the 120 Hz provided by the 13 Lite. Speaking of the Chinese, she inserted a glass Gorilla Glass 5, for extra protection against scratches.

More colors on one side; better fluidity of the other. We give one point for each here.

If there is a point where Xiaomi saved money, it was in sound. The Chinese left only a mono speaker in its premium intermediary, while Motorola takes the opportunity to place a stereo system. In this case, outgoing calls become a secondary channel, to enhance the overall immersive experience.

The result is that you will have low sound power on the 13 Lite, something that does not happen on the Edge. Not to mention the greater balance between bass, mids and treble that the Motorola cell phone offers.

Always good to reinforce that manufacturers no longer put a physical connector for headphones, nor do they send an adapted accessory in the package.

Stereo sound gives the point to Motorola.

The Xiaomi 13 Lite still comes out of the box with Android 12 pre-installed. The Edge 40 already brings Android 13 as a native operating system. Even with the manufacturers promising two software updates, the Motorola model will have a slightly greater longevity than the rival.

The mobile network of both is compatible with 5G technology, to offer fast internet anywhere. Their interface also offers smooth navigation due to the high refresh rates they provide.

Moving on to the features, the Chinese stands out for offering virtual RAM to expand the memory and the presence of the heart rate sensor integrated into the biometric reader. Edge bets on the famous gestures to turn on the flashlight or open the camera, in addition to shortcuts in the Sidebar and Ready For, which turns the cell phone into a portable PC.

With a longer lifespan and more advanced tools, Edge 40 drives home.

Performance

The Xiaomi 13 Lite comes equipped with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 platform. The Edge 40 is powered by the Dimensity 8020. Both with 8GB of RAM, which model do we have the best performance on? Our tests indicated a higher speed on the Motorola device. He was much better at multitasking and finished both rounds with a lead of around 38 seconds.

Benchmarks confirm the Edge’s victory here, but without such a huge distance. This is explicit when seeing that his score was only 20% higher on AnTuTu and recorded an even smaller difference on Geekbench. The two still get along well in games, running even the heaviest titles with satisfactory quality.

It’s a point for Motorola.

Battery

Xiaomi has inserted a 4,500 mAh battery into its smartphone, slightly larger than the 4,400 mAh capacity of the unit used by Motorola. However, in practice, the distance proved to be wider. The 13 Lite clocked in at 27.5 hours of battery life in our standardized tests, which means nearly four hours longer than the Edge 40.

Moving on to charging, both the 67 W adapter sent by the Chinese company and the 68 W accessory from Motorola take around 40 minutes to complete the entire process.

Thus, the Xiaomi 13 Lite scores the point in this regard.

These cell phones have sets of cameras led by a main 50 MP and an ultrawide lens, either the 8 MP of the 13 Lite, or the 13 MP of the Edge. However, the Chinese brings a 2 MP macro sensor more. How will the images look in practice?

With the main one, both have good dynamic range and decent colors. Even so, Xiaomi lacks sharpness compared to the competitor. At night, Motorola also does a better job of maintaining good contrast and not distorting colors.

Their ultrawide suffer from darker photos, with an advantage in definition for the Edge 40. The wider sensor of this also has the benefit of autofocus, which allows you to take macros with better quality than the dedicated lens of the Xiaomi 13 Lite.

Therefore, we give point to Motorola in cameras.

The camcorder of these devices can record in 4K at 30 fps. If you want smoother videos at 60 fps, you’ll need to lower the resolution to Full HD. At the very least, the duo provide snappy focusing and decent quality stereo sound capture. What will change here is the more efficient optical stabilization of the Edge 40, which allows it to better deal with shakes.

It’s a point for Motorola.

Duelists have a 32 MP front camera. The Xiaomi lens is an ultrawide, which allows selfies both wider and taking cropped photos to have a standard image, but here it ends up lacking in sharpness compared to the Edge, which is still the only one to shoot from the front in 4K.

The highlights of the Chinese in this regard are the second 8 MP front camera, aimed at blurring in portrait mode, not to mention the dual LED flash, for better images at night.

The 13 Lite scores for superior night selfies and portrait mode; and the Edge 40 scores for increased sharpness and 4K footage.

The two devices officially arrived in the Brazilian market. The Xiaomi 13 Lite was launched in the country for BRL 5,000, more expensive than the BRL 4,000 initially charged for the Edge 40. In current retail, the scenario has changed, and the Chinese model can now be found close to BRL 2,000, while the Motorola device is still around R$ 3,000.

In this way, Xiaomi takes the last point of the clash.

Done

In this duel between premium intermediaries, the Chinese did not win against Motorola. Even so, there are some attractions in the Xiaomi 13 Lite. It offers a screen with superior technology for better colors, a longer battery life, in addition to taking better quality night selfies and portrait mode.

But the most complete solution is on the other side. The Edge 40 delivers more resistance against water and dust, a more fluid display, a system with greater longevity and more advanced features, faster performance and a set of rear cameras superior in photos and videos. Other than your clearest selfies during the day.

If for you, the Xiaomi set is enough, it will not be a bad option to pay less for it. But it is with the Motorola cell phone that you will have an experience closer to a top of the line.
