We start with the design with two very different looks here. Xiaomi uses a large circular rim to encompass the rear cameras, in addition to its curves on the frame and the hole-shaped notch on the front. On the other hand, Apple still explores its block with the lenses forming a triangle and its sides straighter, but now the notch has become more compact, due to the Dynamic Island.
The 13 Ultra is made of aluminum on the body and vegan leather on the back, while the iPhone remains with a metallic chassis and frosted glass on the back. Both cell phones provide IP68 certification, to guarantee resistance against liquids and dust.

Both Xiaomi and Apple have opted for an OLED type screen, which has a size of around 6.7 inches, with a slight advantage for the 13 Ultra. But the iPhone compensates with a superior brightness level and color calibration that borders on perfection.
On both sides, we have a resolution above Full HD and support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision technologies, to improve display on compatible streaming services. They also contain protection against scratches, whether by Xiaomi’s Gorilla Glass Victus, or the 14 Pro Max’s Ceramic Shield.

As we have two flagships here, these devices provide a stereo audio system, to give the user an immersive experience. They take advantage of the call speaker as an additional channel, and the Chinese one even has a third sound output.
But even with the trio, the 13 Ultra doesn’t reach the full sound power delivered by the iPhone. Apple also beats its competitor in quality, as it has a greater balance between bass, mids and treble. None of them contain a standard headphone connector, nor do they send an adapted accessory in the box.
It’s another point for the 14 Pro Max.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra comes with native Android 13, under the MIUI 14 interface. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has iOS 16 out of the box. Although the Chinese company promises three software updates, it still lags behind the several years of support guaranteed by the Cupertino giant for its devices.
Both offer an agile system and good navigation fluidity, thanks to the 120 Hz refresh rate. We also have 5G compatibility in them, to guarantee a fast mobile network.
Xiaomi’s main features are the floating menu shortcuts, the heart rate sensor integrated into the biometric reader and the expansion of RAM memory. On the other side, Apple provides the Always-on Display and tools around the Dynamic Island, such as event information, notifications, alerts, timer and privacy.
The iPhone’s greater longevity gives it the point.

On one side, there is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform that powers the 13 Ultra. On the other, the A16 Bionic chip appears to power the 14 Pro Max. Which one delivers the best performance? The iPhone came out on top in our tests, with almost a seven-second advantage in total time. It stood out especially in the first round, opening apps faster than its rival.
In benchmarks, Xiaomi still manages to get the better of AnTuTu, with a score 15% higher than its “Apple” competitor, which is higher in Geekbench indicators. As for games, both can run all the titles we tried at maximum quality, with extras activated and great fluidity.

The 13 Ultra is powered by a 5,000 mAh battery, larger than the 4,323 mAh battery in the 14 Pro Max. Can Apple’s system optimization overcome Xiaomi’s superior capacity? That’s not what we saw on our standardized tests. The Chinese smartphone recorded 31 and a half hours of autonomy, with an advantage of almost five hours over the iPhone.
And even when loading, we have no difference in the scenario. Xiaomi comes with a 90 W adapter, which allows you to complete the process in less than 40 minutes. Very different from the 14 Pro Max, which takes 1 and a half hours to reach 100%.
This is an easy point for the Chinese woman.

We find four rear cameras on the Xiaomi, against a triple set on the iPhone. The main 50 MP of the 13 Ultra even improves the wide dynamic range of its images, but the 14 Pro Max gets better colors and contrast with its 48 MP. Not to mention that it takes photos with less noise at night.
The ultrawide of the two maintains the good quality seen in the main one, in addition to performing the macro function, thanks to automatic focus. The Chinese company placed a telephoto lens with 3.2 times optical zoom and a periscopic lens with 5 times zoom on its device. This combination allows for more possibilities for recording from afar than captures made with the Apple model’s 3x optical zoom telephoto lens.
Xiaomi stands out for its greater versatility; and the iPhone scores for better colors and night mode.

The duo’s camcorder is capable of recording in 4K at 60 fps, but only the 13 Ultra can record videos in 8K at 24 fps. Both have optical stabilization to deal with blur, agile focusing and clean, stereo sound capture.

Xiaomi’s front camera may have a higher resolution, but that doesn’t mean it records the best selfies. Their quality in Chinese is pleasing, but this is the iPhone’s strong point, with high sharpness, vibrant colors, contrast that highlights skin tone, and an almost impeccable portrait mode. The 14 Pro Max’s night mode is also the best of the pair here, in addition to being the only one of the pair to also record from the front in 4K.
