[Reporter Ling Meixue/Taipei Report]Xu Yaying, the acoustic consultant who designed and supervised the acoustics of the four performance halls in Weiwuying, passed away in Paris, France on the evening of December 6 at the age of 89. The Weiwuying National Art and Culture Center posted a condolence message on Facebook today (8th): “My deepest condolences to the outstanding Chinese sound master Teacher Xu Yaying.”
Wei Wuying said that Xu Yaying is an internationally renowned architectural acoustician living in France. Originally from Suzhou, he was born in Tianjin (British Concession) in 1934. He graduated and taught in the Architecture Department of Tsinghua University in Beijing, where he studied under Liang Sicheng, and received the honors of acoustician Professor Ma Dayu and famous American acoustician Leo. Supervised by Dr. Borenek. He has been focusing on architectural acoustics since 1957, and was later invited to France’s IRCAM (Institute of Musical Acoustics) to engage in concert hall acoustics research. Xu Yaying founded Xu-Acoustique in Paris in 1987. As an architectural acoustics consultant, she provides precision acoustic design solutions for international high-standard performance venues. In 1995 and 2004, she received the highest architectural acoustics award from the French Academy of Architecture. “Best Technical Consultant Award” and “Construction Technology Research Achievement Award”.
Weiwuying pointed out that Xu Yaying has participated in the planning and design of the Weiwuying National Art and Culture Center since 2007. He used the concept of “box within a box” to block sound and vibration. The vineyard-style concert hall can be said to be the collection of Xu Yaying’s life. A work made from the essence of acoustics. The audience seats are spread out in geometric trapezoidal units. The functional goal is to enable listeners in each area to hear the reflected sound from the side and enhance the three-dimensional sense of the music surrounding the space. The venue took 15 years to plan and build. Even after it opened in 2018, Xu Yaying still cared about Weiwuying for a long time and visited regularly. When the epidemic border was lifted, he immediately arranged a visit to Taiwan. His most recent visit to Taiwan was at the end of October this year, in person. A full-house acoustic test was conducted at the Weiwuying Opera House.
