The Chilean buddies Yaima Cat and Simón Campusano push with the single Petals a very successful addendum to the even finer co-op EP Cinco Relieves from the previous year.

This constellation is convincing again for over three and a half minutes, although this time an overly simple uff-zack beat is relatively unappealing and lacks multi-layered sophistication, pumping into a neo-psychedelic shimmering singer-songwriter relaxation in dreamy pop mode, in the form of dreamy pop reminiscent of yacht scenarios and let you think about the coming summer.
Later, a funky bass pushes further forward as… Petals rippling along warm synths that are as catchy as they are non-committal, as nice as they are in an inconspicuous way, they also create a latent atmosphere of escapism that will certainly work even better in the sunshine than it does now, in the cold days of the year.
The longing with which Yaima Cat and (the after About Living in the Middle Depression underlining his knack for nonchalant melodies) Simón Campusano uses his limitations almost as strengths with a lot of feeling using minimalist methods and a production that hardly screams of high-end equipment, speaks for itself – but cannot completely hide the fact Petals left on its own, the rhythmic simplicity is more likely to suffer from a medium-term perspective than to create economic functionality from it. In this respect, the single works better when combined with pop pieces that create contrast.
