The New York Yankees acquired reliever Caleb Ferguson this Monday in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who received prospects Matt Gage and Christian Zazueta Jr. in a negotiation that could give a lot of performance to manager Aaron Boone’s bullpen.

Ferguson, a left-handed pitcher, went 7-4 with a 3.43 ERA, 70 strikeouts and 23 walks in 60.1 innings of work in 68 games in 2023, being a reliable reliever. He also helped with 7 starts, which gives him extra value on the Bronx Bombers’ pitching staff.

The pitcher accumulated 5 years in the ranks of the Dodgers, showing a 3.43 earned run average allowed, 247 strikeouts and 82 walks in 207.1 innings.

The Yankees have seen how their main targets for the relief have gone to other organizations for financial reasons, losing Wandy Peralta and Héctor Neris, who ultimately agreed with the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs, respectively.

New York hasn’t wanted to spend a lot of money on his replacement this offseason, so turning to the trade market is the best option for general manager Brian Cashman.

Ferguson is scheduled to earn $2.4 million in his final year in salary arbitration before becoming a free agent in 2025, becoming the second Dodgers reliever to be acquired by the Yankees for 2024, after Mexican Víctor González.
