Yonhap News Agency: North Korea has reported more than 200,000 cases of fever for 5 days in a row, a total of about 2.46 million cases

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported today that North Korea reported more than 200,000 new cases of fever for the fifth day in a row, bringing the total to about 2.46 million. North Korea first confirmed an outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) last week.

North Korea’s lack of a vaccine, inadequate medical infrastructure and a potential food crisis have raised concerns that the outbreak will make the situation worse, Archyde.com reported. North Korea has previously rejected foreign aid and closed its borders.

The Yonhap News Agency quoted North Korean state media as saying that as of last night, at least 219,030 people had fever symptoms, with a total of 2,460,640 cases of fever; 1 new death was reported, bringing the total to 66.

Experts have previously analyzed that North Korea’s medical resources are seriously insufficient. The reported cases are all called “fever cases” rather than “confirmed cases”, which shows that North Korea does not have enough testing capacity and no rapid screening agents. Therefore, the actual number of new cases per day may be higher than that reported by North Korean state media.

Rising cases and a lack of medical resources and vaccines have prompted the United Nations human rights body to warn that North Korea’s 25 million people could face “devastating” consequences; World Health Organization (WHO) officials have also worried that the uncontrolled spread of the epidemic could lead to further outbreaks. A deadly new mutated virus strain emerges.
