With Python in Excel, it is now possible to use Python code directly in a spreadsheet and thus take advantage of various libraries to manipulate and visualize data, in addition to existing Excel functionalities.

Microsoft launches Python in Excel, combining one of the most popular programming languages with its do-it-all spreadsheets. The integration is activated by using the new PY function directly in the cells and via the ribbon. It allows the use of Python libraries to clean, manipulate and visualize data in addition to the analysis functionalities already present in Excel (PivotTables, for example), including the exploitation of third-party data via Power Query. Users can also comment on their files and share them with colleagues via Teams and Outlook.

“Excel is the backbone of data analysis in business. With Python in Excel, we’re extending what’s possible for our community and creating an ideal way for data scientists to collaborate with colleagues who depend on Excel,” comments Benoit Barabe, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Excel.

To develop this integration, Microsoft partnered with Anaconda. Anaconda’s Python distribution includes popular libraries such as Pandas, Statsmodel, and Sickit-Learn for analysis, and Matplotlib and Seaborn for visualization. The feature runs in Microsoft’s cloud and the code runs securely and isolated.

“This integration represents an important step that accelerates the adoption of Python and fulfills a long-standing request from our community. With the power of Python at your fingertips, we empower Excel users to discover new horizons for advanced data analytics and machine learning projects, while making them more accessible and efficient than ever before. », rejoices Peter Wang, CEO of Anaconda.
