Virgilio Laverde, A 24-year-old man was arrested on August 15 by officials of the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigation Corps (CICPC), as reported by the X account of Jóvenes Con Venezuela.

Laverde was just a week away from receiving his medical degree from the University of Oriente, and was serving as youth coordinator of Vente Joven in the state of Bolívar.

According to the organization Foro Penal, 1,505 people have been detained since July 28, the day of the presidential elections in Venezuela, and August 19, 2024. Of that group, 129 are adolescents and 18 are people with disabilities or chronic illnesses.

A 17-year-old teenager with autism spectrum disorder who was arrested in front of his home and three journalists who were doing their job are part of the group of people arrested.

Only 90 people have been released from prison.
