Top officials from other parties can only look with envy at their blue opponents. In the Freedom Party, people once knew what they had in their leaders, because their political achievements for the movement and the country justified the decision – whoever made it – to protect such leaders from the hardships of life with life insurance. In 2001, the party paid out more than twelve million schillings as a one-off bonus for the “FPÖ honorary chairman” Hilmar Kabas, and six years later even more than 900,000 euros for Heinz-Christian Strache.
