Like many other Swiss municipalities, Yverdon-les-Bains (VD) has decided to display a Ukrainian flag on the facade of its Town Hall. A sign of solidarity with the Ukrainian people since the armed conflict broke out with the powerful Russian neighbor. But this support is starting to become particularly embarrassing for certain couples who celebrate their civil marriage in the spa town. Some newlyweds did not want to immortalize this happy event in front of the municipal building because they do not want a memory reminiscent of the war because of the flag with two horizontal blue and yellow stripes.

“War has no place on a day that we want to be a party, a symbol of love and life together,” he told 24 hours a man whose brother got married last month. A couple even contacted the municipal authorities to express the wish for the removal of the Ukrainian flag. Without success. According to 24 heures and Le Matin Dimanche, the UDC and the PLR are in favor of respecting the will of people who say no to the blue and yellow symbol on the day they say yes.

Debate on Facebook

On Facebook, the debate fascinates the public. “I noticed the flag this afternoon while people were getting married and I think it has nothing to do with it… It’s not just Ukraine that needs support. So let’s not put a flag for them, to show that we support everyone and not just Ukraine, ”responded a user. “The Ukrainian flag is fashionable, it’s very politically correct. But that’s not right! What about neutrality? What about the flag of Yemen, Syria and so many others? And frankly, a yellow and blue flag in my wedding photos, no thanks,” one woman posted. “I think we call it solidarity (…) Just to show that we are very privileged when what bothers us in our cities is a flag of solidarity”, commented another Internet user.

For the local sections of the PLR and the UDC, the pink-green Municipality should now give a favorable response if other couples were to make the same request. Or even maintain only the nocturnal public lighting system in the colors of Ukraine.
