Children of the Sun, The Mayan Civilizations of Anne Holländer. In Guatemala, the rainforest conceals the remains of an ancient Mayan city erected 4,000 years ago: El Mirador. New laser technologies have recently made it possible to reveal the vastness of the city, which had many temples, palaces and fortifications. The population, gathering some 250,000 individuals, was organized according to a strict hierarchy. The kings ensured their subjects divine protection and security, and received in return the fruits of their labor.
