A French start-up has created a box which, installed on the water supply, promises a 30% saving on the electricity bill.

You don’t have to live on a river to build a hydroelectric dam! The simple flow of water that supplies the home makes it possible to run a domestic micro-power plant 24 hours a day. This is the idea of the French start-up ZeCub (Zecub.fr) which started from the observation that a family of four consumed around 220 m3 of water per year. It has developed an ingenious box, the size of a cabin suitcase, modular and adaptable, which can easily be connected to the water supply of any home (less than thirty minutes).

As the water passes through the turbines, the flow and pressure in the water produces carbon-free electricity, immediately usable or stored in the ZeCub’s batteries. This without changing the quality of the water, or even by eliminating limescale. With an average production estimated between 5 and 7 kWh per day, the Zecub box saves €1 in daily electricity, or €30 per month. It will be rented out to individuals for €15 per month, giving €15 monthly savings. As a bonus, it is possible to monitor consumption and production in real time as well as detect possible leaks on a mobile application.

The start-up also applies its invention to sectors that consume a lot of water (textiles, cement, hotels, hairdressers, etc.) with the aim of making big savings. ZeCub is currently participating in the Lépine 2024 competition. The device will be available to individuals in 2025.
