That was “the” info from the latest Nintendo Direct, a new trailer and release date for the sequel to Breath of the Wild, which we must now call “Tears of the Kingdom”. Of course, this name as well as the new trailer gives food for thought to (try to) understand this episode. Between the return of a cult hero and references to old titles, here is all our info.
The wait is almost over! In its latest Direct, Nintendo finally released the name and release date of the sequel to Breath of the Wild. Zelda Tears of the Kindgom – that’s its name – will arrive on May 12, 2023 exclusively on Switch. Obviously, the Japanese firm took the opportunity to lift the veil on a new trailer, shelled immediately by the fans. So we, too, lent ourselves to the game, taking a look at each other’s theories to bring you “the cream of the crop”. So if you want to know everything about the title’s trailer, you’ve come to the right place.
One name, two meanings
We start with the most obvious, the very name Tears of the Kindgom. Last year, two Nintendo representatives reportedly said: “The names of Zelda titles are generally meaningful and have their significance. They always give clues about what’s going on in the game,” says Nintendo Town. For once, two theories can be applied. In English, “tears” can mean both “tears” and “rips”. In other words, the title of the episode would literally translate to “Tears of the Kingdom” or “Tears of the Kingdom”. To see a little more clearly, our colleagues fromIGN went to look at the Japanese translation. According to them, the original version would lean more towards tears. Even so, Nintendo could bet on both directions! On the official Japanese artwork, the English title also appears.
On one side we have “the tears” and on the other “the tears”. But what could it refer to? For the first case, no need to rack your brains for long. It is undoubtedly a reference to the flying islands – overlooking the kingdom of Hyrule from Breath of the Wild – that Link will have to survey in this new episode. At this time, it’s unclear how all those pebbles ended up in the air, but it has to have something to do with the strange mummy at all. premier trailer and its evil power, causing Hyrule Castle to fly away.
It’s for the “tears” that it gets complicated, which can be interpreted differently depending on the angles. First theory: it’s a reference to the strange object that Link wears on his belt, in the last trailer. An object which furiously reminds us of the chalice of light of Zelda Twillight Princess and which allows Link (then transformed into a wolf) to recover beads of light. The latter are hidden in areas invaded by twilight – another evil force – and have the power to bring light back there. Note that we even find tears of light in Zelda Spirit Tracks (2009) to confront the spirits of the Tower of the Gods. However, the object on Link’s belt can simply be a kind of “recharge” to allow him to use his new powers, such as rewinding the course of events.
The arrival of the goddess Hylia?
This is a first point. As long as we talk about Twillight Princess, some Internet users think they have a link with the character Midna, thanks to the last image of the trailer! She is the former queen of the Twilight Realm – driven from her throne and turned into an imp by the terrible Xanto. Still on the subject of the famous Wii episode | Gamecube, the bottom of the Legend’s sword, on the Tears of the Kingdom logo, is nibbled by green veins. Ribs reminiscent of Midna’s portals in Twillight Princess. The clues therefore seem to come together on this point.
But what some take for the horns of Midna are, in reality, two artifacts facing each other. Artifacts that we see elsewhere in another image of the trailer and which are – obviously – fundamental to Tears of the Kingdom. At the beginning of the video, we see them seven in number, surrounding a still unknown character. Seven like the seven sages of Zelda Ocarina of Time or seven dungeons that we will have to go through? Nothing sure.
To return to the strange figure surrounded by the seven artifacts, IGN is betting on the goddess Hylia, who watches over the mythical Triforce! A deity that can be seen in Breath of the Wild and was introduced by Zelda Skyward Sword – first episode of the official chronology taking place… beyond the clouds. Moreover, in this section, to overcome the challenges of Hylia, you have to collect sacred tears, whose shape is very similar to the artifacts mentioned above. All in all, all that remains is to identify the female figure in the trailer, suspended in the air. Could it be Zelda or the mummy from the very first trailer? You will have to take your pain patiently.
