Being “high” when the body is dying

The US authorities had announced that they would intensify their fight against the illegal import of the animal tranquilizer xylazine. “This is to prevent the drug from entering the US market for illicit purposes while remaining available for legitimate use in animals.”

Xylazine can have serious and life-threatening side effects in humans. The US Food and Drug Administration warned that the drug could lower “respiration, blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature to life-threatening levels”. If xylazine is injected, there is also a risk of serious skin injuries and body tissue rotting and dying, which can necessitate amputations.

Xylazine is becoming more common in fatal drug overdoses in the United States. According to the National Institute on Substance Abuse, in the US state of Pennsylvania, the proportion of all fatal overdoses in which the drug was detected rose from 2 to 26 percent between 2015 and 2020.
