On the morning of the 29th, the office of the spokesperson for President-elect Yoon announced the seven members of the delegation of the Korea-U.S. policy consultation headed by Rep. Park Jin.
Rep. Cho Tae-yong was the deputy head of the committee, along with Jeong Jae-ho, professor of political science and foreign affairs at Seoul National University, Park Cheol-hee, professor at Seoul National University’s Graduate School of International Studies, Pyo Se-woo, former deputy director of the Korean Embassy in the U.S.
It is noteworthy that in addition to lawmakers Jin Park and Tae-yong Jo, who are well-known in the United States, experts from various fields such as China, Japan, national defense, and economic security are included.
Rep. Park, who is the chairman, is from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is considered a representative foreign affairs representative of the National Assembly, having served as vice president of the Korea-U.S. Parliamentary Foreign Relations Council and chairman of the National Assembly Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee. In August 2008, he visited the United States to attend the Korea-US Congressional Council on Foreign Relations and had a private conversation with President Biden, who was then chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Rep. Cho Tae-yong, a former diplomat familiar with the U.S. and North Korean nuclear issues, served as the first vice minister of foreign affairs and the first deputy director of the National Security Office, following the head of the Korean Peninsula Peace Relations Headquarters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the South Korean government’s chief representative for North Korean nuclear weapons.
At the same time, Professor Jae-Ho Jeong, a Chinese researcher, and Professor Cheol-Hee Park, a Japanese researcher, joined the delegation. Professor Park is known to have participated in President-elect Yoon’s pledge to relations with Japan during the camp, and is also an expert member of the Foreign Affairs and Security Subcommittee of the Transition Committee.
In addition, the fact that Reservist Director Pyo Se-woo and Associate Research Fellow Yeon Won-ho joined is read as the purpose of this consultation with the US to address economic and security issues such as national defense and supply chain, respectively.
During their visit to the US, it is known that the delegation of policy consultations will meet widely with policy makers and executors in the United States, such as the White House National Security Council (NSC) and the administration and congressional officials such as the State Department, and think tanks.
There is also the possibility of meeting with US economic-related ministries, such as the Department of Commerce, with economic and security issues in mind.
Since the US Congress will be in recess for two weeks from the 11th of next month, it is necessary to visit the U.S. before that to meet with Congressional officials. Therefore, the visit to the US is expected to be early next month.
