[앵커]

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) investigation team, which visited Japan, announced that it would disclose the results of this activity, including analysis of the components of contaminated water at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, at the end of April.

Although the IAEA has promised transparent and objective verification, it has re-emphasized that it will not intervene in the Japanese government’s decision on marine discharge policy.

The IAEA investigation team visited the Fukushima nuclear power plant on the 15th and 16th.

At this event, experts collected samples of contaminated water from nuclear power plants that had been purified twice.

This is because the exact condition of the contaminated water to be discharged into the sea is the key to safety verification.

The IAEA plans to send these samples to its three affiliated laboratories for component analysis on radioactive materials.

The investigation team announced that the results of the first visit, including sample collection and inspection of purification facilities, will be released at the end of April, and a comprehensive report will be issued before release to the sea.

The IAEA has promised objective and transparent verification that it is listening to the concerns of the international community.

He also emphasized that experts from 11 countries, including South Korea and China, participated in opposing ocean discharge and are listening to various views.

However, he reiterated that the release is a decision by the Japanese government and the role of the IAEA is to ensure the safety of this measure.

The IAEA will visit Japan again next month to see if it has the capacity to properly manage ocean discharges against the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
