First of all, we welcome the new start of the 200 workers who have been hired by Hyundai Motor Company. Hyundai Motor Company hired 185 full-time technical workers for the first time in 10 years, and six of them were women. Compared to the fact that there are already 2% of women at Hyundai Motor Company, 3% of the successful applicants are women, and it is a result of barely showing face. At least, the current situation is a step forward in that the previous 2% of female workers were in-house subcontracted non-regular workers and then converted to regular workers, but now they started as regular workers like men from the beginning.
In July 2017 and November 2018, through the ‘Sisters Who Crush Gender’, “It is a prejudice created by gender discrimination that the automobile process is a difficult job that is not appropriate for women and a place where it is difficult for women to survive, and the reality is different from this.” As living witnesses, women at the site have stated several times that “women have worked equally well in high-skilled, high-paying technical jobs that were reserved for men. Rather, the reason why it is difficult for women to survive is not the body that women have different from men, but the prejudice and discrimination against women.”
The 3% pass rate of female workers in this full-time job recruitment at Hyundai Motor Company is disappointing and insignificant, but even this is the result of women inside and outside Hyundai Motor Company fighting for equal employment and speaking out.
However, it is regrettable that we cannot just congratulate the Minimum Wage Commission when the results of the full-time recruitment of Hyundai Motor Company are going through difficulties. This is because only six women have entered what can be called the most decent job in Korea, but many women have to work at the minimum wage and around it and watch the results of the appointment committee that decides next year’s wages.
We hope that more high-quality jobs reserved for men will be opened to women by breaking the sexist employment practices. In addition, it is revealed that women’s gender equality employment is what women want to change jobs around the minimum wage to quality jobs.
I sincerely congratulate the six women workers who have been hired by Hyundai Motor Company, and I hope that today’s Minimum Wage Committee, which will determine the minimum wage level to be applied in 2024, will produce results that can be a glimmer of hope for many women workers.
