“I fell in love. A Korean idol 30 years younger than me.”

Tokyo Gas, the world’s largest city gas company that supplies city gas to Tokyo and the metropolitan area of Japan, started a TV commercial on the 18th with a mother who fell in love with the Korean wave.

It has been a long time since the Korean Wave craze has been established in Japan, but it is very unusual for a domestic conglomerate that has no Korea-related business to use Korea as an image advertisement. Coincidentally, it was aired two days after the summit between President Yoon Seok-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and some interpret it as reflecting favorable perceptions of Korea in Japan following the improvement in Korea-Japan relations.

A new TV commercial for Tokyo Gas begins with a scene in which a taxi driver mother with an adolescent daughter falls in love with Hwanwoong of the Korean idol group ‘Oneus’. She listens to music and reads magazines. She then buys Korean-style desserts by herself in Shin-Okubo, Tokyo’s Korea Town, and enrolls in a Korean language school to learn Korean.

With his honed skills, he asked a Korean customer in a taxi, “Can I help you? Please leave it to me” in Korean. He won the lottery for the concert in Seoul, which he longed for, but unfortunately, he caught Corona 19 and was frustrated from going to Korea. Her bedridden mother energizes herself by eating Korean-style samgyetang made by her daughter.

Tokyo Gas said in a press release, “We tried to show the image of a company that supports ordinary people by showing passion for what we love and enriching our lives.”

Actor Tamae Ando, who appeared in the advertisement, appeared at the ‘K-BOOK Festival’ held by the Korea Foundation in Tokyo last November and had an event reading Korean short stories. Ando said through Tokyo Gas, “I started studying Korean because I have been working on Korea lately,” and she said, “I want to go to Korea and try delicious food within this year.”
