Last month’s record heavy rains flooded downtown Seoul, killing eight people.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has decided to install a ‘large depth’, or rainwater drainage system, first in Gangnam Station, Gwanghwamun, and Dorimcheon, which are vulnerable to flooding, to prevent rain damage.

Reporter Hwang Bo Hye-kyung reports.

Water gushed up from the middle of the road, and the entire street turned into a sea of water.

On the 8th of last month, Gangnam Station in Seoul was flooded with record heavy rain of more than 100 mm per hour.

Because the area around Gangnam Station is lower than the surrounding area, it is often prone to flooding when it rains.

In the Dorimcheon Stream in Sillim-dong, Seoul, there have been several accidents where citizens are isolated or killed due to the flooding of water.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has decided to build a ‘Great Deep Rainwater Tunnel’ to prevent rain damage in such habitually flooded areas.

The deep rainwater tunnel refers to a drainage facility that creates a large tunnel 40-50m below the ground and stores rainwater when it rains and then discharges it into a river.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to invest 900 billion won by 2027 to install it in three places: Gangnam Station, Dorimcheon, and Gwanghwamun.

In the section from Gangnam Station to the Han River, a drainage system that can handle more than 3.1km in length and 110mm of rainfall per hour is being promoted.

It was decided to review the installation of the Gwanghwamun area at a length of 3.2 km from Hyoja-dong to Cheonggyecheon in Jongno-gu, and 5.2 km in length from Sindaebang Station to Yeouido in Dongjak-gu for Dorimcheon at a scale of 100 mm or more per hour.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to promote drainage facilities in Sadang-dong, Dongjak-gu, Gangdong-gu, and Yongsan-gu out of the six locations that Mayor Oh Se-hoon promised to install in stages.
