[영상] Biden Meets Emperor Naruhito, ‘Hands Up’ Without Shaking Hands

(Seoul = Yonhap News) “It was an honor to meet Emperor Naruhito. The friendly relationship between the US and Japan is being maintained by the people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.”

This is a post posted on the official Twitter by US President Joe Biden on the 24th (Korean time).

When I met Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo for my first visit to Japan on the 22nd, the atmosphere seemed to be very friendly.

However, President Biden’s personnel law was a bit far from this atmosphere.

He didn’t even shake hands with Emperor Akihito who had met him, nor did he bow down to greet him. All he did was greet each other through conversation while standing face to face with his upper body upright.

It seems that President Biden’s ‘minimal greeting’, which was quite different from that of former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, was because he considered diplomacy.

Former President Barack Obama caused a controversy over low-profile diplomacy in November 2009 when he bowed close to 90 degrees and bowed down to a ‘folder greeting’ while preventing Emperor Akihito.

As if conscious of this, former President Trump visited Japan in November 2017 and tapped the right forearm of the Emperor when he met with Emperor Akihito. Some pointed out that this provoked Japan and that it was ‘violation of manners’.

Some have even linked President Biden’s greetings to COVID-19.

This means that physical contact has been completely cut off to prevent the risk of infection with COVID-19. Let’s see the video.
