(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Sang-heon = U.S. President Joe Biden has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to be brought to trial for war crimes in connection with the discovery of the bodies of hundreds of civilians believed to have been executed by Russian forces in the Bucha region of Ukraine.

President Biden told reporters on the 4th (local time), “You saw what happened in the bucha. This man (Putin) is cruel and what happened in the bucha is so shocking, everyone saw it.” the news agency reported.

“You have to gather all the specifics” for the trial, he stressed.

President Biden once again called Putin a “war criminal”.

On the 16th of last month, he first described Putin as a ‘war criminal’, and after calling him a ‘murder dictator’, ‘slaughterer’ and ‘gangster’, he is pouring out criticism every day.

President Biden said he had to “take responsibility” and said he would “impose more sanctions on Russia.”

As additional sanctions measures, the possibility of sanctions in areas such as energy, minerals, transportation and finance, including secondary sanctions against some countries that continue to trade with Russia, is being discussed.

Following President Biden’s comments, it is noteworthy whether legal procedures at the level of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which deal with disputes between countries, or the International Criminal Court (ICC), which deal with individual war crimes, will be in full swing.

US Secretary of State Tony Blincoln also said, “I cannot help but resent the discovery of the bodies of civilians in the secondary area.” “The organization will bring all the information together so that we can ascertain exactly what happened in Ukraine.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement that the EU had previously set up a joint investigation team with Ukraine to investigate and collect evidence on war crimes and crimes against humanity, and the EU supports Ukrainian prosecutors. He said he was prepared to bolster these efforts by sending an investigation team to the scene.

Rousseff Borrell, who oversees EU foreign policy, also said, “The EU will urgently work on additional sanctions against Russia.”

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said: “Reports from the secondary and other regions raise serious questions about the possibility of war crimes, grave violations of international humanitarian law and serious violations of international human rights law.” It called for conservation, independent investigation, compensation and remedies for victims and their families.

Earlier, Ukrainian authorities said they had recovered the bodies of 410 civilians from the Bucha area near the capital Kiiu (Kyiv), where the Russian army had retreated.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also visited the area and called it evidence of Russia’s “genocide” and called for stronger sanctions against Russia.

Russia, however, denies the allegations that the civilian massacre disclosed by the Ukrainian government was fabricated to slander Russia.
