Daecheongho Lake, the third largest lake in Korea, is also the source of drinking water for the Chungcheong region.
Okcheon-gun, North Chungcheong Province, started collecting waste underwater at Daecheong Lake for the first time in 20 years.
Reporter Lee Seong-woo visited the site.

Divers find a large rusty iron plate at the bottom of the lake.
As you get closer, you can see ropes, etc., but the ship has sunk to the bottom of the lake.
Divers attach air flotation bags to various parts of the ship, and after a while, the ship that has been sunk on the bottom rises to the surface.

Elsewhere, divers are busy collecting underwater trash.
From scrap nets to pallets used on construction sites, you’ll find things that shouldn’t be at the bottom of the lake.
The visibility in the water is poor due to the green algae covering the lake, and muddy water rises every time it moves, so the collection work is a series of difficulties.

Okcheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do has started collecting underwater garbage for the first time in 20 years to improve the water quality of Daecheong Lake.
Professional divers are divided into three groups to carry out the collection work, and they are retrieving several abandoned ships a day.
[박은주 / 수거업체 관계자 : (하루에) 저희 조에서만 2~3척 정도 건지는데 일반 고무보트도 있고요. 어로를 위한 FRP도 좀 발견했고요.]
This is garbage collected from Daecheong Lake.
As you can see, various kinds of garbage such as abandoned ships and pallets were submerged in the water.
Okcheon-gun expects that this underwater garbage collection will help improve the water quality of Daecheong Lake and preserve the aquatic ecosystem.
