The marsh populace (Caltha palustris) is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Ranunculaceae family.

Description

Grouping of flowers, and humid environment, characteristics

Detail of the flower (The flower is made up of all the reproductive organs and envelopes…)

It is a robust, tufted plant with glabrous, heart-shaped, toothed leaves, the lower ones long petiolate. The stems are partly creeping with adventitious roots at the nodes. The fairly large flowers are apetalous but have five bright golden yellow sepals.

Habitat

It is a plant of light (Light is the set of electromagnetic waves visible to the eye…) in partial shade of damp meadows, swamps, ditches and cool woods.

Bloom

Depending on the altitude (Altitude is the vertical elevation of a place or an object relative to a level…) from March to August.

Toxicity

All parts of the mature plant are poisonous. They contain proto-anemonin. Before flowering, the immature plant can be consumed after boiling (Boiling is the formation of bubbles during a violent change of a body…).

Distribution area

Common plant in non-acidic wetlands throughout Europe, except in Mediterranean regions. It is also found in eastern America (America is a continent separated, to the west, from Asia and…) from the North (North is a cardinal point, opposite the south.) , to Quebec
However, following drainage and damming, wetlands have declined significantly in Western Europe, leading to the disappearance of part of the Caltha palustris populations. Locally, it is the dystrophication of environments which is detrimental to this species (In life sciences, the species (from the Latin species, “type”…).
