FC Blau-Weiß Linz is still denied a place in the quarter-finals of the ÖFB Cup: Coach Gerald Scheiblehner’s team was eliminated in yesterday’s round of 16 duel at SCR Altach with a 0-2 defeat.
The Linz coach started the rotation machine during yesterday’s guest game in Ländle: compared to the most recent Bundesliga home game against WAC, the 46-year-old changed his starting eleven in eight positions. Goalkeeper Andreas Lukse, midfielder Alexander Briedl and attacker Kristijan Dobras made their competitive debuts right from the start.
After just nine minutes, the guests were robbed of their great chance of taking the early lead: Conor Noß was pulled back on his jersey in the penalty area by former Blue and White kicker Felix Strauss and fell – referee Sebastian Gishamer already had the whistle in his mouth, she did but remained silent. The home team was also lucky in the 16th minute: At a corner, Blue and White striker Stefan Urlaub missed a completely free header from five meters. Altach did better: Lukas Gugganig (33′) also scored after a dead ball to give Vorarlberg a flattering lead.
Scheiblehner with four-way change
A setback for the blue-whites, from which they only recovered at the beginning of the second half: The ball had come to Dobras via a detour, but Altach goalie Dejan Stejanovic came out of his goal at exactly the right time and prevented the opportunity ( 52.).
BW coach Scheiblehner wanted to breathe more life into his team with a quadruple substitution after 58 minutes – but the home team had the best chance. In the 66th minute, the difficult pitch conditions kept Blue-White in the game: Upper Austrian Dominik Reiter had already overcome Lukse, but his shot got stuck in the mud in front of the goal line.
Shortly afterwards, the pitch could no longer stop him: After a counterattack, Reiter scored the decisive 2-0 – and shot Blue-White out of the competition.
