1 Killed, 3 Injured in Sword Attack at Swedish School

An 18-year-old armed with a sword attacked the Brinell high school in Fagersta, Sweden, on Friday. The violence left one person dead and three others injured before police shot and detained the suspect.

Bloodshed on the First Day Back

The incident unfolded on Friday afternoon in the central Swedish town, which has a population of approximately 13,000 residents. Classes had just resumed after the summer recess. It marked the first day back for some students at the facility, which has 450 students ages 16 to 20.

Rapid Police Response and Casualties

Police Chief Tommy Alriksson told a news conference that officers responded rapidly to the alarm. “The first patrol entered and let us know that the perpetrator was subdued with gunfire,” Alriksson said. The suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

The dead person was found as police entered the school to secure the premises. Västmanland County authorities reported that two teenage boys, ages 12 and 17, suffered severe injuries in the attack. A third injured person under the age of 18 was slightly injured and has since been discharged from the hospital, according to Swedish news agency TT.

Weapons, Helmets, and Digital Footprints

Public broadcaster SVT, citing unnamed sources, reported that the attacker wore a helmet and carried a sword, and had a previous conviction for assault. Media reported the attacker was a former student at the school.

Swedish media outlets indicated investigators were examining a TikTok account deleted shortly after the attack. It featured a picture of a sword that appeared to be taken in a restroom at the school, posted 20 minutes before the attack.

Motive Unknown Amid Ongoing Investigation

Investigators have not yet established a motive for the assault.

“We have no reason at this time to believe that there are multiple perpetrators,” Alriksson told reporters. He noted that national police have already executed two house searches tied to the suspect. Law enforcement officials declined to release further details to avoid influencing upcoming witness interviews.

Lockdown and National Mourning

The attack prompted a five-hour lockdown across the school, as well as temporary restrictions at several other educational and public facilities in Fagersta. Students described scenes of panic and confusion as emergency responders flooded the campus.

National leaders expressed shock and dismay over the violence. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson canceled a scheduled speech and posted a message on social media stating that thoughts remain with all those affected. King Carl XVI Gustaf released a statement through the royal household expressing dismay and sadness, while Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson emphasized national solidarity with the community.

Memorials and Community Support

On Saturday morning, approximately 70 residents gathered at a memorial site established by the municipality. They left floral tributes and lit candles.
