The 11-year-old Bolivian boy who contracted HIV after being raped by four people has died in a hospital in the city of Santa Cruz, due to health complications caused by AIDS, local press reports.

The minor fell into a coma and at dawn the next day he suffered a cardiac arrest, although the doctors managed to revive him. However, during the morning he suffered another cardiac arrest and could not be saved.

His body is already in the town of Yapacaní, department of Santa Cruz, where he is being watched at his parents’ house.

The little boy was in intensive care after being hospitalized for the second time due to the seriousness of his health condition, for which he had to be intubated.

Group and continuous rape

The abuse came to light in October 2021, when the boy, then 10 years old, was diagnosed with HIV and then revealed what had happened. The minor recounted the harassment that he had suffered at the hands of the four men for around two years and that they even threatened him with a weapon so that he would not speak.

The alleged aggressors were her neighbors, four brothers aged 15, 17, 24 and 28. The latter died in prison as a result of the same disease that infected the child.

While the first is unaccounted for, although the authorities believe he fled to Chile, and the second is being held in preventive detention in a juvenile rehabilitation center.

The third defendant, Miguel Ángel ST, 24, who is also in prison, was beaten this week by an angry mob, who dragged him out of a courthouse.

Government demands

The mother of the minor has asked for justice to be done. For his part, the Bolivian president, Luis Arce, has offered support to the victim’s family and also demanded justice.

“We express our deepest sorrow for the departure of the little boy in Yapacaní. This tragic outcome cannot go unpunished, it is inconceivable to accept so much evil against an innocent child,” the president wrote on his Twitter account.

For its part, the Ministry of Justice has demanded that the judicial authorities and the Public Ministry extend the accusation for the crime of infanticide against those responsible.

“The act was committed with viciousness, fraud and full knowledge,” he reported. In addition, he has reiterated his demand for “urgent action and exemplary sanctions with the full weight of the law in the face of such a crime that dismays the population.”
