112 deaths due to forest fires in the Valparaíso Region – La Discusión 2024-02-13 14:02:32

The Legal Medical Service (SML) reported this Sunday that the fatalities of the forest fires in the Valparaíso Region increased to 112 people, as of press time.

Based on a report last updated at 4:00 p.m., the institution details that 32 deceased have been identified and 42 autopsies have been performed.

Through a statement, the SML stated that it “regrets the tragedy that the Valparaíso Region is experiencing and informs that at this time all its technical, medical and administrative teams are present, with the support of professionals from Santiago, ready to face this emergency”.

The letter adds that, in parallel, “the Undersecretary of Justice, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the Investigative Police, the Carabineros of Chile and the national and regional directorates of the SML are in permanent coordination to optimize the collection, identification and delivery of the deceased.”

“The forensic institution delivers its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, and commits its maximum efforts to meet the requirements of justice and citizenship,” the statement closes.

Prior to this latest assessment, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, estimated that the fire in Valparaíso “has undoubtedly been the one that has generated the most human losses, and is probably going to be the emergency situation, after the 2010 earthquake, which “It has generated more victims in Chile in recent times.”
