1408 Sequel: Stephen King’s Haunted Hotel Story Returns with Director Mikael Håfström

Natalia Dyer will headline the sequel to the 2007 Stephen King adaptation 1408, while Elijah Wood will also play a supporting role, gizmodo.com reported, bringing a fresh set of victims back into the cursed New York hotel room that terrified audiences nearly two decades ago.

Returning to the Dolphin Hotel

The original 2007 film, directed by Mikael Håfström, followed skeptical author Mike Enslin as he investigated the notorious Room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel, despite severe warnings from hotel manager Gerald Olin. That first cinematic outing grossed $132 million worldwide against a $25 million budget, drawing strong praise from critics with an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, nineteen years after that initial run, the creative engine behind the original adaptation is spinning back up. Håfström is returning to direct the new installment, working from a script he co-wrote with Mark Verheiden. Production on the project is slated to kick off in the first quarter of 2027.

John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson Negotiate Secondary Roles

While John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson are currently negotiating the terms of their return to reprise their original roles as Enslin and Olin, sources indicate they will appear as secondary characters this time around. Dyer takes center stage as the focal point of the narrative, supported by Wood in a secondary capacity.

The seeds for this continuation were planted well before the official announcement. In an interview last year, Cusack told People that 1408 was the only film in his catalog he would ever consider doing a sequel for, noting that most movies suck.

Bluestone and FilmNation Fund the Upcoming Project

Funding for the upcoming project is split between Bluestone Entertainment and FilmNation Entertainment. FilmNation holds the international distribution rights while sharing domestic rights with WME Independent, with plans to present the film to buyers at the American Film Market.

Behind the scenes, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Richard Saperstein of Bluestone, Spyglass Media Group, and Frank Mayor are producing the film. Casting duties are managed by John Papsidera, rounding out a production team preparing to bring the supernatural saga back to the screen.
