According to the authorities, the Russian attack on a market in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kostyantynivka on Wednesday resulted in one fewer deaths than initially reported. “According to official figures, there are currently 16 dead and 33 wounded,” a police spokeswoman told Ukrainian media. The day before there had been talk of 17 deaths.

On Wednesday, a bullet fell on a busy market street in Kostyantynivka. Videos on the Internet show the impact and a huge fireball. Debris flew through the air, fires broke out. You might see dead people on the streets and people running for their lives. It was one of the most devastating attacks in weeks. Ukrainian government officials and representatives of the UN and the EU expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and strongly condemned the Russian attack.

It is not yet clear what kind of shell fell on Kostyantynivka market square on Wednesday. In his first reaction, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj spoke of an artillery hit. According to the police, this version has now been ruled out. Some local media assumed an S-300 missile.

Kostyantynivka is just under 20 kilometers southwest of the city of Bakhmut, which is occupied by Russian troops, and has repeatedly been the target of Russian attacks.
