Last October alone was 1.7 degrees warmer than the estimated value before industrialization. Scientists are also concerned about the entire year: 2023 is likely to set a drastic heat record, says the EU climate change service Copernicus.

Last October was the hottest worldwide since weather records began. But that’s not all: the year 2023 could be the warmest in 125,000 years. According to the October temperature record, this is “pretty certain,” the EU climate change service reported on Wednesday. “The record was broken by 0.4 degrees Celsius, which is a huge margin,” said C3S deputy director Samantha Burgess about the past month.

“If we combine our data with that of the IPCC, we can say that this is the warmest year in the past 125,000 years.” The Weltklimarat IPCC draws on measurements from sources such as ice cores, tree rings and coral deposits.

One reason for the hot year is the ongoing greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. Global CO₂ emissions reached a record high in 2022. Added to this is the occurrence of the weather phenomenon “El Nino”. This has warmed the surface water in the eastern Pacific this year. “Most El Niño years are now record-breaking because additional global warmth contributes to the steady increase in human-caused warming,” said climate scientist Michael Mann of the University of Pennsylvania.

Climate change leads to extreme events. This year, these included floods that killed thousands of people in Libya, intense heat waves in South America and the worst wildfire season Canada has ever seen.

“We must not allow the devastating floods, wildfires, storms and heatwaves we have experienced this year to become the new normal,” said Piers Forster, a climate scientist at the University of Leeds. “By rapidly reducing greenhouse gas emissions over the next decade, we can halve warming.”

Although countries have set increasingly ambitious targets to gradually reduce emissions, this has not yet happened.
