2024 European Football Championship Qualification: New Play-Off Mode and Latest Updates

2023-11-22 16:47:00

21 of the 24 tickets for the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany (June 14 to July 14) have already been taken. The last three free places will not be played in playoffs until next March, and the new mode creates a curiosity.

For example, Estonia, as one of the worst teams in the qualification, actually still has a chance of securing one of the last three tickets to Germany. With just one point and two goals scored – less than football dwarf San Marino (three) – the Estonians finished last in Group F.

But since the results of the Nations League are crucial in the new, somewhat complicated play-off mode, the team benefits from its good performance there.

The mode stipulates that the four best teams from leagues A, B and C, which previously failed to qualify, contest the playoffs.

EM 2024: Lewandowski and Poland with last chance

However, since all but three nations from League A have qualified, the best team in the lowest League D, Estonia, moves up. Estonia’s opponent is Robert Lewandowski’s Poland on March 21st.

Although Estonia and Co. still have to determine the last three participants, the pots for the draw for the six preliminary round groups of four teams each have now been determined.

An overview of the lottery pots for the draw in the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg on Saturday, December 2nd (6:00 p.m. in the live ticker).
