2024 Finance Law: New Income Tax Thresholds and Exemptions Explained

2024-01-10 12:26:52

The 2024 finance law increased the income tax scale by 4.8% since January 1. Thus, the maximum income not to be exceeded in order not to pay tax in 2024 is also changing.

From now on, the net taxable income threshold is 17,133 euros for a person with a family quotient share (single, divorced, separated or widowed). If the income received in 2023 does not exceed this threshold, the person concerned will not pay income tax in 2024. However, this threshold changes depending on the household. Indeed, the ceiling from which one becomes taxable is calculated by adding all income (salaries, pensions, rentals, etc.), and after deducting property and professional deficits, deductions and deductible charges. This tax exemption threshold varies depending on the number of people in the tax household. (family quotient).

How a household is tax exempt

According to the calculations of Figaro Private, a person with a single family quotient share is exempt from tax in the event that the amount of net taxable income is less than 17,133 euros. Regarding households with a family quotient of 1.5 shares (single parent with one child), the threshold not to be exceeded in order not to pay tax is 22,780 euros. For a household whose family quotient is 2 shares, the amount of net taxable income is 28,427 euros (32,000 euros for a couple subject to joint taxation).

For a household whose family quotient is 2.5 shares, the amount of net taxable income is 34,074 euros (37,647 for a couple subject to joint taxation). In the case where the number of shares in the family quotient is 3 or 3.5, the amount of net taxable income is respectively 39,721 and 45,368 euros (43,294 and 48,941 for a couple subject to joint taxation). Finally, for a household whose family quotient is 4 or 4.5 shares, the amount of net taxable income increases to 54,015 and 56,662 euros (54,588 and 60,235 euros for a couple subject to joint taxation).

Regarding the calculation of the shares of the family quotient, 1 or 2 parents and 2 children represent 3 shares. 1 or 2 parents and 3 children represent 4 shares and 1 or 2 parents and 4 children represent 4.5 shares. Beyond the 4th child, add 0.5 part for each additional child, indicates the CAF website.
