Paris, June 20 (EFE).- The Spanish city of Málaga, the Argentinian city of San Carlos de Bariloche, the Serbian city of Belgrade, the Thai city of Phuket and the US state of Minnesota opt this Wednesday to be chosen as the venue for the 2027 Specialized Exhibition, during the 172nd General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris.
The delegates of the 179 member countries of the BIE, an organization created in the mid-nineteenth century, will choose the venue for this Expo that will be held between two Universals, the one in Japan in Osaka in 2025 and the one that will take place in 2030, to which Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Busan (South Korea), Rome (Italy), Moscow (Russia) and Odessa (Ukraine) choose.
The General Assembly will open with a presentation of each of the five candidates, with Malaga as the one in charge of opening fire and publicizing the details of the Expo that it plans to organize between June 5 and September 5, 2027 under the theme “The urban age: towards the sustainable city”.
Both the theme chosen, as well as the positioning and fame Málaga has gained in recent years make the city optimistic about the vote.
After Malaga it will be the turn of San Carlos de Bariloche, which opts to be the first city in Latin America to organize a Specialized Expo, which in its case would be held between February 1 and April 30 with the theme “Nature + Technology = Sustainable energy. A viable future for humanity.”
The situation of Argentina, its location, somewhat far from most countries and the fact that Buenos Aires resigned after having hosted a similar Expo in 2022 are the main points against Bariloche.
The next to appear will be Minnesota, which with the motto “Health of humanity, health of the planet: well-being and a good life for all” intends to organize the event between May 15 and August 15, 2027.
For many months, the state of the United States was the great favorite, since its theme linked well with the pandemic, but in recent weeks it seems to have lost weight, sources from the BIE tell EFE.
PHUKET AND BELGRADE, ON THE RISE
“The future of life: Living in harmony, sharing prosperity” is the theme chosen by Phuket to organize the Expo between March 20 and June 17, 2028.
Thailand has made a major promotional effort to delegates in recent weeks that has reinvigorated their chances of being elected.
Belgrade will close the presentations, with the theme “Let’s play for humanity: Sport and Music for all” and with the dates from May 15 to August 15, 2027.
The Serbian candidacy has also seen its options grow in recent weeks, playing a lot with its status as a non-aligned country, which has allowed it to get closer to delegations from African, Asian and even Latin American countries.
Once the presentations are over, only the delegates of the member countries will remain in the plenary, who will cast their vote, secretly, through an electronic system.
In the first ballots, it is necessary to obtain two thirds of the votes to be elected. After each one of the votes, the candidacy with the least support is eliminated and gives way to another vote.
If no candidate obtains two thirds of the support, when there are only two cities left, the one with the most support will win the vote. EFE
