The US Embassy in Beirut announced the provision of new assistance to Lebanon worth $29.5 million, as part of new commitments from the United States in response to the global food crisis.

And the embassy said in a statement, Tuesday, that “as part of the $2.76 billion that the US government recently announced to help address the crisis… Food security global, will be presented US Agency for International Development (USAID) $29.5 million, divided into $15 million in humanitarian assistance, and $14.5 million in economic support funding, to help protect vulnerable populations in the face of growing food insecurity in Lebanon.

She pointed out that “in the face of the continuing economic crisis, it continues Purchasing power The vulnerable groups in Lebanon are declining, while the prices of basic foodstuffs and fuel continue to rise.”

“This situation was exacerbated by the unprovoked and unjustified Russian invasion of Ukraine, which directly affected Lebanon’s wheat imports, as well as global food markets.”

The US Embassy indicated that the humanitarian aid provided by the US Agency for International Development, worth $15 million, will be delivered through the United Nations World Food Program, “which will benefit approximately 300,000 vulnerable Lebanese who will receive monthly household parcels distributed over the months.” coming.”

“The USAID contribution also includes funding of $14.5 million in economic support to vegetable and grain farmers through supplies such as seeds and seedlings to maintain local food production,” she added.

USAID will also support small dairy producers with feed, veterinary services, and tools to ensure quality milk production, as dairy products are an important food source in Lebanon, according to the statement.

Technical assistance, training and matching grants will also be provided to agricultural processors in order to improve productivity and reduce dependency on imports, thereby promoting growth in the processed food sector and increasing the availability of affordable local food products.
