3 little European gems under $25 a bottle

Suggestions from Philippe Lapeyrie.

Plateau Reserve 2021
Ferreirinha House – Sogrape
Douro – Portugal
Code : 13189594
Prix : 13,45 $
Availability: + 500 bottles online and 365 branches in the provinces
Residual sugar per litre: 1.7 grams
Serve at 10-11 degrees Celsius

To be enjoyed with: a white fish ceviche or a Caesar salad with chicken strips.

This impeccable and stunning blend of varietals native to northern Portugal offers a lot for its very modest invoice. Its aromas of lime, green apple and lemon zest are very inviting on the nose. It is completely dry, salivating, airy and highly digestible as a type of product. A white that could make many cuvées costing $5-6 a bottle more envious. Do not wait more than 12 to 18 months to consume it.

Dolcetto d’Alba 2021
Pian Balbo – Poderi Colla
Piedmont – Italy
Code : 13674362
Prix : 17,50 $
Availability: 140 bottles online and 120 branches in the provinces
Residual sugar per litre: 1.6 grams
Serve at 15-16 degrees Celsius

To be enjoyed with: a plate of Italian antipasto to share: beef carpaccio, grilled peppers, olives, etc.

You surely know Barbera and Nebbiolo which are 2 grape varieties widely planted in the North-West of Italy, more precisely in Piedmont. We also find in this magnificent wine-growing area the dolcetto. This variety of grape is capable of the best, as well as the worst. When it is worked with care by a conscientious producer, it can offer a very beautiful aromatic and gustatory expression. You have a good example of this with this pretty cuvée from Poderi Colla. Do not forget the bottle more than 2-3 years old in your reserve.

Faugeres 2020
Old Vines – Mas des Capitelles
Languedoc – France
Code : 14719391
Prix : 23,85 $
Availability: 10 bottles online and 105 branches in the provinces
Residual sugar per litre: 1.9 grams
Serve at 16-17 degrees Celsius

To be enjoyed with: flank steak, bison or beef, marinated in red wine with crunchy fries.

Old vines of Mourvèdre, Syrah and Carignan make up this tasty, southern and very expressive Languedoc blend. It is at the same time spicy, greedy, juicy and complex. The quantities in store are good right now, but hurry because it won’t last long! No problem to lengthen it 5-6 years in the darkness and the freshness of your wine cellar.
