On the occasion of World Heart Day and Heart Week from September 26 to 30, the Douai hospital center and more particularly the cardiology team are organizing this Thursday, September 28, the 3rd edition of the heart awareness day. ‘heart failure.
The event takes place in the hall of the Douai Hospital Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Health professionals will have stands there where you can benefit from high blood pressure screenings, information and advice.
The objective is to help the general public recognize the first symptoms.
Still little known to the general public, heart failure nevertheless affects 1.5 million people in France. Undetected or poorly treated, its prognosis is serious: 70,000 deaths each year, one death every 7 minutes. It is the leading cause of hospitalization among people over 65 years old.
Recognize the first symptoms
The main symptom is unusual shortness of breath on exertion. Heart failure can also manifest itself by sudden shortness of breath during the night forcing the person to sit up in bed: this is acute lung edema. The two other most common symptoms are the appearance of edema of the lower limbs (swollen legs, water retention) and unusual fatigue.
The causes of heart failure are well known and multiple. The two most common causes are myocardial infarction, which destroys part of the heart muscle, and high blood pressure. Other causes exist: valve disease (heart murmur), viral infection of the heart (myocarditis), cardiomyopathy (damage to the heart muscle).
