42 percent sit at the toilet with their smartphone

In our neighbors in Switzerland it is slightly higher (45 percent) and in Italy it is significantly higher at 63 percent, shows a YouGov survey commissioned by the online retailer Galaxus. Of those Austrians who use their smartphone in the toilet, 17 percent do so always, 29 percent often, 44 percent occasionally and one in ten only rarely.

People in Germany and France were also asked about their cell phone use in quiet places. A total of 2,547 people aged 15 and over took part in the representative survey, 500 in Austria, Galaxus announced. Across all those surveyed in the five countries, the younger the people, the more often they use their cell phones in the toilet. Around seven out of ten (71 percent) of those under 30 do this, while only 24 percent of the 60-plus generation do this.

Every second man goes to the toilet with a cell phone

More than every second man (52 percent), but only around four out of ten women (43 percent) in the five countries examined use their smartphone while sitting on the toilet. 67 percent of cell phone users in the toilet consume social media such as Facebook, TikTok or Instagram. Exactly four out of ten (40 percent) read, listen to or watch news. Almost as popular (37 percent) is chatting via WhatsApp, Threema and Co. One in three (33 percent) reads or writes emails in the toilet, 30 percent play mobile phone games.

Germs can easily get stuck in scratches on the smartphone or on the cell phone case, the broadcast said. The advice is that your cell phone and hands should be cleaned regularly.
