As you age, it can be difficult to adopt new habits or break old ones, especially when it comes to your health.

Telling yourself that you’re too old to run or that you’ve missed out on yoga, there is often a tendency to stick with what you know and do the things you’re used to, whether they’re good for your health or not.

But age can play a role in your ability to participate in certain activities, and making healthy lifestyle choices is better for your life and may even mean adding years to your life.

A scientific study showed the behavior of more than 6000 men and women between the ages of 44 and 84 over a period of seven years.

The researchers said that doing things like quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise actually reduced an individual’s risk of death during the study period by 80 percent.

With that motivation in mind, it’s time to let go of the excuses and work on the five healthy lifestyle choices we list for you that you can make at any age.

– Get some sleep

Getting a healthy amount of sleep is essential at every age, because it restores and strengthens almost every part of the body, and failure to get enough sleep has been shown to weaken the body’s immune system.

Make sure you get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, and talk to your doctor if you’re having trouble.

– Be more active

While physical activity may seem like a lot more strenuous than it was in your younger years, it’s very important that you don’t let your age stop you from staying active.

“Exercise is also one of the best things you can do to help prevent dementia and other cognitive changes,” said Argy Hillis, director of the division of cerebral vascular at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

It also reduces the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and some types of cancer.

You should aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity, anything from light jogging to leisurely walks, on most days of the week.

– Keep your mind healthy

It’s not just your body that you have to keep in good shape, but your mind as well. And just like your body, your brain needs regular exercise.

According to Harvard Medical School: “It is believed that challenging your brain with mental exercises activates the processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication between them.”

– Quit Smoking
