A surprise worth several hundred euros arrives in the mailboxes of millions of French people.

A nice surprise will soon slip into the mailboxes of 6 million French people. In fact, the State will pay the energy check from April 2. This financial assistance aims to support low-income households in paying their energy bills. It can be used to pay an electricity, gas, wood or even fuel oil bill.

The amount of the energy check varies between 48 and 277 euros, depending on the income and composition of the household benefiting from it. The energy check is sent automatically to eligible households, either by post in the form of a paper check, or electronically via the official website chequeenergie.gouv.fr. This aid is valid until March 31, 2025.

The campaign to send the 2024 energy check will begin on Tuesday April 2. Reception dates vary depending on the department of residence. Residents of the overseas departments, part of the Hauts-de-France departments or the southwest of the country will be the first served from the week of April 2 to 5.

Then, between April 8 and 12, residents of around forty departments will receive the energy check. Among them are the inhabitants of the Center Val de Loire, Auvergne, Corsica regions or certain departments in the east and south of France.

During the week of April 16 to 19, people who live in certain departments of Ile-de-France, Brittany or the Côte d’Azur will benefit from the energy check. Finally, Parisians and residents of Haute-Garonne will receive their check last, during the week of April 22 to 25.

Once received, the energy check offers multiple possibilities of use. It can be used to pay bills directly to suppliers of electricity, natural gas, wood, fuel oil or other heating fuels. It is also possible to allocate it to the payment of certain charges (heating, hot water) included in the fee for specific housing such as young workers’ homes or nursing homes. The energy check can also be used to finance energy renovation work in the home, provided that you use an RGE (Recognized Environmental Guarantor) approved professional.

To benefit from the energy check, you must nevertheless meet several eligibility criteria. Obtaining this aid is conditional on a resource ceiling, corresponding to the reference tax income per consumption unit. Concretely, in 2024, this ceiling rises to 11,000 euros for a single person and 16,500 euros for a couple. An additional 3,300 euros must be added to the ceiling for each dependent child in the household. To check your eligibility for the energy check, a simulator is available on the chequeenergie.gouv.fr website. All you need to do is enter your tax number.
