With its blacksmith and jeweler, Diablo 4 offers many opportunities to strengthen your hero. They repair your items and can even upgrade them. How can I upgrade items? In order to be able to upgrade items in Diablo 4, you have to visit the blacksmith for weapons and armor and the jeweler for jewelry. Once you have reached the required level, both offer services in exchange for gold and materials to strengthen your items.
What’s the point of upgrading items? Each upgrade to your items increases item power by 5 points. In addition, the basic value of your items, such as armor or damage per second, is increased.
Nevertheless, not every upgrade is worthwhile, because Diablo 4 has levels that are not visible for its items, so-called breakpoints.
If you exceed one of these breakpoints when upgrading, your items will be massively strengthened with their perks.

What are breakpoints? These breakpoints are stages in upgrading that you can cross when you reach a certain item power level. Since these levels are not directly visible, dataminers fished them out. You should note the following values:

- level 3
- Level 4

- stage 6
So if you own gloves with an item value of 146 and then level them up at the blacksmith, the item will be upgraded to level 2, because 5 points will be added to your item value for each upgrade. So you then have a glove with an item value of 151, but that’s not all.
What do I have to consider with the breakpoints? If you exceed a level when upgrading, not only your basic values but also your bonuses of the respective equipment will be adjusted, since these must correspond to the respective level.
However, these adjustments are not always positive, because like the YouTuber wudijo has already established, these changes are a matter of luck. Either you get good rolls, or the percentages are worse than before your upgrade.
So note that if you upgrade items, they should rather be located near the level limits, otherwise you will not benefit from the noticeable boost in your stats.

When is it worth upgrading items? It depends on the items and their level. The YouTuber wudijo himself advises against leveling items up to level 30, since you can get along well with unleveled equipment up to that point.
Only later, when you are close to the endgame and have found good items that match your build, could upgrades make sense. Upgrades are expensive, so save your materials and gold for meaningful upgrades.
Another tip: disassemble the items from the beginning and sell them later. Items give more gold towards the end of the game, but the crafting materials are always the same.
