A toilet-dwelling rodent sent a Canadian man to hospital with organ failure and sepsis after biting him on the arm.
The 76-year-old man was trying to “fish” the rat out of his toilet when the furry creature bit off two of his fingers, according to the new post
The unfortunate man went to the emergency room and received basic wound care and a tetanus shot and returned home.
But 18 days later, the man returned to the hospital after suffering multiple symptoms including fever, headaches and abdominal pain that continued for three days, according to an article published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
His heart rate was high, his blood pressure was low and his kidneys were damaged, according to medical tests. She had signs of multiple organ dysfunction and sepsis and was admitted to the intensive care unit.
While his bite wound had mostly healed, doctors suspected it might have something to do with his worsening condition.
They ran blood and urine tests and found the man had leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that is often transmitted to humans from animals such as rats and can be fatal in rare, severe cases.
The bacteria is found in animal urine and doctors believe the rat may have had a bite of the contaminated urine when it bit the Canadian’s fingers!
More than one million cases of leptospirosis are reported worldwide each year, and nearly 60,000 of these cases result in death. Mortality rates from the bacterial infection have been reported to be between 5 and 15 percent, according to the study.
In the Canadian’s case, he was given treatment that included antibiotics and steroids and was released from the ICU after three days.
