Residents who were appalled by the behavior demanded action against the people involved. Unidentified foreigners involved in the incident could face consequences, including possible blacklisting from Namibian parks, according to a Tourism Ministry spokesman.
Kenneth Nepeda, vice-president of the Federation of Namibian Tourism Associations, expressed his dismay, saying such behavior tarnishes Namibia’s reputation and may attract unscrupulous tourists.
“The actions being seen are deeply disturbing and reflect badly on Namibia,” said Mr Nepeda, stressing that Big Daddy Dune is not only a tourist attraction but also a place for families to enjoy.
The identities of the tourists involved in the incident remain unknown, as do the people responsible for taking the photos and video. The authorities have not yet responded to inquiries about the identity of the tourists.
Romeo Muyunda, a spokesman for the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, condemned the behavior as “extremely shocking” and stressed that it constituted public indecency, punishable under Namibian law.
“Tourists must abide by the laws and regulations of the places they visit,” Mr Muyuda stressed, noting that the tourists had left the country before authorities took action.
He urged Namibians to report violations of park regulations early to ensure swift enforcement of penalties.
However, some social media users defended the tourists’ actions, arguing that naked sunbathing is harmless.
