Inflation in Belgium reached 11.27% in September, its highest level since August 1975, when it stood at 11.42%, the Belgian statistics office Statbel said on Thursday.
Inflation stood at 11.27% in September compared to 9.94% in August and 9.62% in July, according to Statbel data.
The sharp rise in inflation is largely due to energy products. Electricity now costs 81.3% more than a year ago. Natural gas is 134.9% more expensive year-on-year. The price of heating oil rose by 56.3% in one year. Fuels cost 16.8% more than a year earlier.
Faced with inflation, the Belgian government adopted on 16 September a new package of energy measures to support households and businesses.
Households will receive, by the end of the year, a reduction of nearly 400 euros on their gas and electricity bills.
A package of measures has also been announced for businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises. Companies that have problems paying their invoices may request a spreading of their tax debt.
