The right-wing “New Democracy” party was strongly ahead of the left-wing “Syriza” party led by Tsipras, according to results published by the Ministry of the Interior, with a turnout of more than 60%.
After counting more than 90% of the votes, the ruling party won 40.81% of the votes and 146 seats in the 300-seat parliament, compared to 20.06% of the votes for Syriza and 71 seats.
The centre-left PASOK party came in third with 11.58% and 41 seats, followed by the Communist Party with 7.18% and 26 seats, and the far-right Greek Solution Party with 4.46% and 16 seats.
With no absolute majority, a rerun of the parliamentary vote is expected at a later date. Tsipras, the former prime minister, called on Mitsotakis to propose June 25 or July 2 as tentative dates for the next vote.
