Caroline Garcia Shines in WTA 1000 and Japanese Tournament: A Strong Comeback

Caroline Garcia is doing better. After her good run in the WTA 1000 in Guadalajara where she reached the final four last week, she got off to a good start to her Japanese week on Thursday despite a long trip. The Frenchwoman thus imposed her law on the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, 28th in the world, in two sets (6-4, 6-3) and a little over an hour and a half (1h31 precisely) of play. She might find herself in quarter-final the one who had soundly beaten in Mexico, Maria Sakkari, if she defeats the Japanese Misaki Doi.

Garcia delivered a solid performance and, above all, did not let herself get frustrated when things threatened to take a bad turn. Quickly in front (3-0), she saw her opponent catch up immediately and even obtain three new break points and the 4th game won consecutively at 3-3, 0/40. But the French number 1 reacted well to ward off the danger and regain the score, before taking the lead by once once more seizing the opponent’s service (6-4).

Much more impactful than her opponent (29 winning shots, 20 more than Kalinina), Garcia was able to count on her first ball (79% success behind and 10 aces) to well protect her commitments in the second act. And this before emerging at the right moment, at 4-3 on the restart to conclude immediately on his serve. Diligent and aggressive, she also knew how to limit the number of her errors (20). A good omen for the future.
