Saving the Greater Horseshoe Bat in Canton of Neuchâtel: Conservation Efforts and Initiatives

There are 25 species of bats in the canton of Neuchâtel. One of them is more fragile than the others: the greater horseshoe bat. Only around thirty individuals are still listed there. They have fewer insects to feed on, fewer corridors of vegetation to orient themselves in, too few attics still accessible to sleep and reproduce in summer…

To save this flying mammal, a cantonal program was launched for four years. It benefits from federal subsidies and is endowed with 50,000 francs.

One of the five recorded summer roosts of the greater horseshoe bat is located at the Trois-Rods farm, above Boudry. “We know it a little more present in hibernation sites, in caves,” explains Valéry Uldry, regional correspondent for Chiroptera Neuchâtel, the Neuchâtel regional coordination center for the protection of bats.

The plan of protection measures for the greater horseshoe bat includes knowledge of the roosts, “possibly their improvement and then, it will be necessary to improve its hunting grounds, by planting hedges in suitable places,” explains Valéry Uldry.
