Trump’s endorsement faces another test in Louisiana Senate primary runoff

Louisiana voters head to the polls today, June 27, 2026, to decide the Republican Senate primary runoff between Rep. Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming. The contest serves as a high-stakes test of Donald Trump’s endorsement power, following the primary defeat of incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy last month, according to NBC News.

The Path to the Runoff

The Senate seat became contested after incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy—who voted to convict Donald Trump during his second impeachment trial—failed to advance past the May 16 primary. Cassidy secured only 25% of the vote, finishing in third place and marking the first time an elected Republican senator has lost renomination since 2012, as reported by Fox News. In that same primary, Rep. Julia Letlow led the field with 45% of the vote, while state Treasurer John Fleming followed with 28%.

Because no candidate reached the 50% threshold, Letlow and Fleming moved to today’s runoff. Letlow has maintained a steady campaign, consistently highlighting the endorsement she received from Donald Trump before she even entered the race in January. She also carries the backing of Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, a top Trump ally, according to Fox News.

Diverging Conservative Strategies

The candidates have adopted distinct strategies to court the state’s conservative base. Fleming, a former congressman and founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, has positioned himself as the authentic “MAGA conservative” in the race. He previously served as a deputy chief of staff in the final months of Trump’s first term.

Fleming has explicitly criticized Letlow’s past support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies and foreign aid. “The dynamic now is completely different. People are actually looking at the candidates, and what they see is I’m far more conservative in my practice, in my votes, in everything that I do,” Fleming told NBC News. Letlow, however, has stated she reversed her position on DEI after she “saw it for what it was.”

Despite Fleming’s attempts to differentiate himself, some analysts suggest Trump’s early endorsement of Letlow has effectively insulated her from ideological attacks. “The fact that he endorsed her right out of the gate, again, inoculated her against any sort of claim that she’s liberal because folks tend to still perceive President Trump as being conservative,” Louisiana GOP strategist James Hartman noted, via NBC News.

Trump’s Influence and Voter Turnout

The role of low voter turnout remains a wild card in today’s election. While Letlow is widely expected to hold an edge due to Trump’s support, some observers believe the race could tighten if turnout is exceptionally low and only the most committed primary voters participate. “I believe that she’s going to win,” said Louisiana GOP strategist Lionel Rainey III, as reported by NBC News. “But I think it’s going to be much, much closer than anybody expects and I would not be shocked if [Fleming] somehow edged this thing out.”

Trump’s involvement has been aggressive. During a tele-rally on Thursday, he referred to Letlow as a “fearless champion” and labeled Cassidy a “disloyal disaster,” according to reports from CBS News. The former president has been actively working to shape the congressional landscape, though his endorsement streak hit a snag recently in Iowa, where his preferred candidate failed to win.

The Democratic Context

While the Republican runoff dominates the headlines, a separate Democratic Senate runoff is also taking place today between farmer Jamie Davis and Navy veteran Gary Crockett. The winner of the Republican nomination will be considered the clear frontrunner in the midterm election, as Louisiana is a reliably red state where Trump secured 60% of the vote in 2024, according to CBS News. The state has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 2008.

Crockett, who has framed his campaign around an “affordability agenda,” has criticized current Senate healthcare benefits and oil industry subsidies, according to WAFB. However, the ultimate victor in the November general election will likely be determined by the strength of the GOP nominee emerging from today’s primary.
